BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine has established the Charles S. Ackerman Endowed Professorship in the Department of Neurology, an action approved by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees at its April 8 meeting.

The endowment is funded by Charles S. Ackerman, founder and chair of Ackerman & Co. and Ackerman Security Systems Inc.

The goal of the endowed professorship is to promote research, patient care and education in the area of neurology with a focus on Parkinson's disease. In addition to the endowed professorship, a research fund to support the current research efforts of a drug discovery scholar within the Department of Neurology has also been established.

The nationally ranked UAB Department of Neurology is home to eight comprehensive divisions and seven centers offering an array of clinical activities. Over 25,000 patients are cared for annually through state-of-the-art subspecialty care and innovative treatments for conditions including stroke, critical care, epilepsy, dementia and behavioral neurology, movement disorders, headache, clinical neurophysiology, neuroimaging, neuroimmunology, neuro-oncology, neuromuscular disorders, muscle and nerve histopathology, and neuropsychology.
