BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - More than 600 University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) students, including members of sororities, fraternities and other organizations, are making plans to make a difference for others in the community when they go "Into the Streets" Saturday, Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The students will be participating in the nationwide "Into the Streets" initiative, a program that promotes volunteerism among college students in cities across the country. UAB participates in it each spring and fall; the UAB Leadership and Service Council sponsors the event.
The UAB students will volunteer at several locations across the Birmingham metropolitan area. Students are scheduled to work in the Five Points community gardening, planting trees and cleaning up the neighborhood. Three groups of students will work to beautify the landscape around Center Street Middle School, 1832 Center Way in Birmingham; Hemphill Elementary School, 1240 Cotten Ave. S.W.; and at Jackson Elementary School, 1401 16th Way. S.W.
Other students will work in the Children's Garden at Aldridge Gardens at 3530 Lorna Road in Hoover and at the Alabama Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Twenty other students will give manicures to residents at the Altamont Retirement Community-Greenbriar.
