Students are encouraged to submit an abstract of their research results to a regional or national meeting. UAB students under the mentorship of a faculty member in the Department of Surgery, who have a first-authored abstract accepted for oral or poster presentation at a regional or national meeting, may apply for travel reimbursement from the Department of Surgery. Support is typically limited to travel to one meeting per year and a maximum reimbursement of $1,000.
Prior approval is required for travel. Complete this online form to request approval before registering for the meeting. Requests are typically reviewed within one week of submission. Please contact Sandy Chambliss with any questions.
Requests for the following meetings that meet policy requirements are considered:
- Academic Surgical Congress
- ACS Clinical Congress
- American Surgical Association
- Society of Asian Academic Surgeons
- Society of Black Academic Surgeons
- Southern Surgical Association
- Surgical Education Week
Students who are presenting abstracts at other meetings should apply for travel funds from the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine. If Heersink School of Medicine declines to fund, a request can be made to the Department of Surgery.
