Building on the foundation laid as a CA1, residents gain experience and knowledge in the management of complex patients undergoing complex procedures in all the subspecialty areas. The CA2 curriculum is designed to allow each resident a specially designed schedule providing them early exposure to subspecialty areas they are considering for fellowship.
Curriculum Overview
-
Neuroanesthesiology
Residents learn management of patients undergoing complex and routine spine and intracranial procedures. The experience includes functional neurosurgery such as awake craniotomies, vascular procedures, and complex spine procedures involving neuromonitoring.
-
ENT
Resident experience focusing on management of patients with difficult airways and alternative means of ventilation.
-
Vascular
This rotation includes anesthetic management for all types of vascular procedures, both open and endovascular.
-
Children's Hospital
Residents participate in both routine and complex cases including in all pediatric age groups, and introduction to postoperative pain management.
-
Cardiothoracic
During this 2 month rotation residents learn management of patients undergoing routine and complex cardiac procedures as well as thoracic surgical procedures.
-
In Patient Pain Service/Regional
As in the CA1 rotation residents participate in providing perioperative pain management through a wide variety of techniques. As a CA2, residents function with greater autonomy, learn the more complex procedures, and develop health care team management skills.
-
Postanesthesia Care Unit
Through this experience, residents learn management of postoperative patients after all types of surgical procedure and develop their skills in leading an interprofessional health care team.
-
Critical Care Medicine
As a CA2, residents are provided experience in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Neurologic ICU, and Trauma Burn ICU. Each of these rotations provides unique learning opportunities. In the SICU residents have a greater level of responsibility for patient care and health care team leadership compared to their CA1 experience. In the NICU and TBICU residents gain experience with these unique patient populations. As a result of the varied ICU exposures, residents develop expertise in management of a broad spectrum of high acuity perioperative issues.
-
Simulation
CA2 residents will be provided with high fidelity immersive simulation, OSCE, virtual and simultaed trainining in ultrasound and echocardiography lead by department faculty. In addition, many subspeciality rotations provide unique didactic opportunties.
By the time they complete this second year of clinical anesthesiology training, residents have gained experience and confidence in managing complex patients throughout the perioperative period. They have learned to function effectively as leaders in the health care team. As they finish their CA2 year, residents have completed the vast majority of the cases required by the American Board of Anesthesiology. This allows a great deal of freedom in designing their CA3 experience.
