Solving problems is what interests me in my position at UAB. It can be as simple as repairing machinery or as complicated as determining the source of field failures or low performance properties in a recently developed steel. My position at UAB gives me the opportunity to pursue these interests on a daily basis. It is also important that the students working in the casting lab develop problem solving skills as that are what an employer wants when they hire one of our graduates. We expose our students to real world problems and the sponsors who want them solved so the student has an appreciation of the time and financial constraints that they will face in their career. I have been paid with soft money my entire career so I have an appreciation of these constraints.
