Collat professor Julio Rivera, DBA, has been selected to receive the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching opens a new website for his exceptional accomplishments in teaching. He was honored September 10 at UAB's annual Faculty Convocation at the Hilton Birmingham.
An information systems professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems and Quantitative Methods, Rivera was recognized for his intimate involvement with curriculum development within the Collat School of Business and at the university level. For more than 30 years, Rivera has been committed to his students' success, using his unique background to teach the importance of critical thinking and problem solving in the classroom and beyond.
"He taught that having a solid foundation is great, but it is imperative that students think for themselves and not just regurgitate what's in a textbook," a student wrote as part of Rivera's nomination.
Rivera has been published in the Information Security Education Journal and the Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice. His research centers on computer-mediated learning and information security. He has served the university in numerous ways during his tenure at UAB, including as interim director of the UAB Honors College opens a new website.
