WELCOME FIRST-GEN BLAZERS!
At UAB, we’re proud to say that 27% of our students are working towards being the first in their family to earn a four-year degree. But what does it mean to be FIRST GENERATION? UAB defines first-generation student like the federal government: students who come from families where neither parent/guardian completed a four-year college degree.
The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership and UAB believes being first-generation means a lot more than that. It is not about what first-gen students lack but about what they contribute to our campus community and student organizations: dedication, persistence, problem-solving, sacrifice, and so much more. That’s why the UAB community embraces and celebrates all First-gen Blazers—their unique identities, stories, experiences, and goals.
The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership aims to support First-gen Blazers in their journeys to graduation. We strive for all students to have opportunities to serve the community, inspire change, and lead into the future, and first-gen students bring dynamic skills to our many student organizations where many of these opportunities can be found.
