Dr. Nicholas Onken's childhood love for reading led him to optometry with the goal of helping kids read. He graduated the New England College of Optometry in 2013 and completed a residency in Pediatrics and Binocular Vision in 2014 from Nova Southeastern University in further pursuance of his goal to help children read and achieve their full potential.

Teaching has always been a passion for Dr. Onken and after a successful career in private practice as a pediatric optometrist, he joined the UAB School of Optometry faculty in 2022 with the hopes of sparking a love of pediatric eye care in the rising generations of optometrists.

A Los Angeles native, Dr. Onken moved to the Birmingham area in 2014 and has fallen in love with the area. He loves backpacking and playing board games with his wife and two children.
