UAB Piano Series featuring Yeol Eum Son, 4 p.m., UAB's Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. The UAB Piano Series presents the world's finest pianists. Pianist Son (her name is pronounced Your-arm Son) was awarded the Silver Medal in the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009. She performed Brahms' Piano Quintet with the Takács Quartet during the Cliburn's semifinal round, which earned her the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music. UAB Piano Series featuring Einav Yarden, 4 p.m., UAB's Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. The UAB Piano Series presents the world's finest pianists. Israeli pianist Yarden studied with renowned pianist Leon Fleisher at the Peabody Conservatory and in 2005 earned her master's of music and graduate performance diploma. She has performed as a soloist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Minnesota Symphony, Beethoven Orchester Bonn, Calgary Philharmonic, Jerusalem Symphony, Plovdiv Philharmonic, The Israel Symphony, The Spirit of Europe Symphony, under Sir Neville Marriner, Aldo Ceccato, Leon Botstein, Mark Russell Smith, Mendi Rodan and others. UAB Department of Music presents the annual UAB Jazz Summit, UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. Students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to apply for the UAB Jazz Summit. Participants will be placed in classes and ensembles on a variety of levels determined by audition and band director recommendation. Students will be placed in big bands and combos according to their skill and experience and will be mixed in with UAB jazz students in their various ensembles. Clinicians will include some of the top jazz musicians in the area, and master classes will be given on every major instrument. UAB Opera presents a double bill of Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" and Britten's "The Burning Fiery Furnace." Purcell and Britten are often paired as the two most important British composers, even though their work was more than three centuries apart. "Dido and Aeneas" tells the story of the Queen of Carthage, and will be staged with traditional Baroque gestures and dances. "The Burning Fiery Furnace" has a nearly all-male cast and recounts the story from the Hebrew Scriptures of Nebuchadnezzar and the three Israelites. Call 205-975-2787 for ticket information.
