May 10, UAB Wind Symphony to Present Free, Outdoors Mother’s Day Concert

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Wind Symphony will perform a free, outdoor concert in honor of Mother’s Day at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 10, on the UAB Campus Green, University Boulevard between 14th and 16th Streets South. For information, call the UAB Department of Music at 205-934-7376.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Wind Symphony will perform a free, outdoor concert in honor of Mother's Day at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 10, on the UAB Campus Green, University Boulevard between 14th and 16th Streets South. For information, call the UAB Department of Music at 205-934-7376.  

The UAB Wind Symphony, a 55-member concert band, features the most talented wind and percussion players at UAB. On the program is light, popular and patriotic music, including selections from "Wicked" and the "Wizard of Oz," Motown favorites, "America the Beautiful" and traditional band music. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnics and snacks, said director Sue Samuels, M.M.

"The concert is a tribute to our mothers and to all moms in Birmingham," Samuels said, "and it is a send-off concert as the Wind Symphony departs on Monday for a spring tour to Washington, D.C."

The band will depart Birmingham Monday, May 1, on a tour that will take the band through North Carolina, where they will play a concert at West Carteret High School in Morehead City, then to Fairfax, Va., where they will have a rehearsal at George Mason University with Mark Camphouse, a nationally renowned band composer. The band then will travel to Washington, D.C., for a concert at the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, and a concert at the Old Post Office Pavilion in downtown D.C. at noon Thursday, May 14. The band will return to Birmingham Friday, May 15.
