BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama consumers and retailers are preparing for the Aug. 1-3 Alabama Sales Tax Holiday on purchases of clothes, books, office supplies and computers of a certain value.
"Given the soft economy that we face in 2008, Alabama consumers should really enjoy the benefits of the tax holiday this year. For most, this means an 8 to 10 percent ‘discount' on their purchases," said UAB retail expert Robert Robicheaux, chair of the department of marketing and industrial distribution. "And, for families preparing to kick off a new school year, which means heavy purchases of clothes, school supplies and more, the tax holiday comes at a perfect time.
"The tax holiday has been a remarkable success for several years in Alabama. In years past it has been responsible for significant increases of more than 5 - 6 percent in retail sales for merchants. This has been great for Alabama retailers but even better for Alabama consumers."
