BIRMINGHAM, AL — The School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is among the nation’s best according to the 2002 U.S. News & World Report ranking of medical schools. UAB was ranked 27th in the research category and tied for 41st in the primary care category.

Four medical specialties at UAB were also ranked by the magazine: AIDS (4th), internal medicine (13th), women’s health (tied for 15th ) and pediatrics (19th).

UAB’s doctoral programs in clinical psychology and psychology were ranked 67th (tie) and 116th (tie), respectively. The master’s program in public affairs jumped from number 91 to number 65 (tie) and the master’s program in occupational therapy was tied for 40th.

Other schools and specific programs are not ranked annually by U.S. News, but appear throughout their most recent rankings. For 2001, the master’s degree program in health services administration was ranked 10th (tie) and the master’s program for physical therapy tied for 19th. UAB’s School of Public Health was tied for 16th in the most recent ranking of public health schools and the master’s degree program in nursing was tied for 21st.
