BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Associate Professor Charles Calhoun, Ph.D., has been named chairman of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education.
Calhoun’s appointment became effective in August. He succeeds Joseph Burns, Ph.D., who will return to teaching and research.
Calhoun has taught at UAB since 1989. His research interests include mathematics education and multiculturalism. He has been the School of Education’s assistant dean for urban affairs since 1997, overseeing urban research efforts related to education and quality of life issues.
Calhoun received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1996. From 1997 until 2001, he directed the staff development team for Birmingham Systemic Change 2000 Project for K-5 Mathematics, a collaboration between UAB and the Birmingham City Schools. The project was funded with a $2.7 million National Science Foundation grant.
Calhoun earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Earlham College in 1974. He later earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Georgia State University in 1978 and 1987 respectively. He is a native of Decatur, Georgia.
