BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Professor Maryann Manning, Ed.D., of Southside, was presented with a resolution from the Alabama Senate on Friday, June 22, for her years of service to education in the state.
Manning, who will retire in August after 35 years, was presented with the resolution by UAB alumna Kathryn Chandler, Ph.D., during the opening ceremony of the annual MidSouth Reading and Writing Institute held at the Alys Stephens Center. Manning was honored for her “service to the enhancement of educational effectiveness in the state of Alabama.”
Manning, who teaches in the UAB School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, is a renowned expert in reading and writing instruction and integrated curriculum. She has been a member of the UAB faculty since 1972. She has written and co-authored more than 10 books. She also is a columnist for Teaching K-8 and Childhood Education magazines. She is a member of the International Reading Association’s Board of Directors.
In 2002 she became the inaugural recipient of the Ellen Gregg Ingalls /UAB National Alumni Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Teaching. Last December she won the Truman Pierce Award from the Alabama Association of Elementary School Administrators (AAESA) in recognition for her educational leadership and outstanding contributions to advance the direction of education in Alabama.
