BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Associate Professor Erin Wright, M.F.A., is the new chairman of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Art and Art History, said Bert Brouwer, M.F.A., dean of the UAB School of Arts and Humanities.
Wright assumes leadership of the department from Gary Chapman, M.F.A. Wright served as associate chairman under Chapman. Associate Professor Jessica Dallow, Ph.D., has been named associate chair.
Wright earned his M.F.A. in graphic design and illustration at the University of Arizona and his B.F.A. in graphic design at Colorado State University. He has 20 years of experience as a designer and teacher. Under the pseudonym Asylum, Wright’s work has appeared in nationally and internationally competitive design annuals and compendiums, including PRINT and Graphis Design Journal: The Americas. He has designed posters which have been shown in competitions and exhibitions around the world, including: Warsaw, Poland; Brno, the Czech Republic; Kyunggido, South Korea; the Mark X International Poster Invitational, Republic of China; the Golden Bee 7, Moscow, Russia; and the 56th Annual Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington Show, Washington, D.C.
Wright has won several local and regional awards for design, including two gold and two silver Birmingham Advertising Federation ADDY awards in 2007. He also was named Birmingham ADDY Designer of the Year for his poster for Identity 2006, an exhibition in the Czech Republic, and for his posters promoting the John Waters and Laurie Anderson lectures at UAB. Wright also won two silver awards at the Seventh District Regional ADDY Awards this year.
The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad recently asked Wright to submit five posters to the “Sailing in Qingdao” Poster Annual as part of the celebrations leading up to the 2008 Olympic Games. Wright also has been invited to participate in the 15th Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition (CIIPE), the premier poster exhibition in the United States to be held September 2007. His posters are in several collections, including the Robert Irwin archive at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
