BIRMINGHAM, AL — Mina Madani, of Kingston, New York, has been named the first recipient of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health Global Health Award.

Madani, a second-year graduate student at UAB pursuing a Master of Public Health in international health and global studies — health behavior, was chosen to receive the award due to her academic performance, commitment to global health and ability to analyze global health issues, as demonstrated in her award essay, “The HIV/AIDS Pandemic: ‘High-Risk’ Are Not the Only Ones at Risk.”

The $5,000 award, sponsored jointly by the UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health and John Snow, Inc. (JSI), can be used toward the cost of graduate-level public health education at UAB and/or an internship experience.

The Sparkman Center and JSI are committed to building the capacity of global health communities at home and abroad to address critical health problems, and to supporting a new generation of health professionals in the field.
