UAB was well represented at the 2023 American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) Annual Meeting last month in Anaheim, California.
Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery faculty members led sessions, presented research, and received honors.
Assistant professor Zain Hashmi, M.D., presented a poster on the “National Study of Teletrauma in US Emergency Departments,” which describes the prevalence, trends, and factors associated with teletrauma use and adoption among emergency departments in the U.S. Hashmi is at the forefront of examining the usefulness of telemedicine in providing trauma care.
Former faculty member Parker Hu, M.D., presented on “Use of Funnel Plots to Identify Individual Surgeons as Significant Outliers in Mortality after Emergent Trauma Laparotomy” – research he conducted while at UAB.
Hu also led a quickshot presentation for “Comparison of Military and Civilian Surgeon Outcomes with Emergent Trauma Laparotomy in a Mature Military-Civilian Partnership” – highlighting the benefit of these partnerships for military surgeons in maintaining their technical skills and providing clinical experience and mentorship.
John Holcomb, M.D., FACS, moderated and spoke at a panel during the AAST Fallen Surgeons Military Educational Symposium called “Ethical, Moral, and Legal Challenges in the Operational Environment,” drawing on his extensive experience as an Army Colonel and surgeon.
Holcomb also helped lead a two-part course for early career surgeon scientists called “Taking the Next Step: A Comprehensive Approach to Making the Transition to Independent Investigator.”
Rondi Gelbard, M.D., FACS, associate professor, was inducted into the inaugural class of the AAST Leadership Academy – which aims to foster professional growth and facilitate networking. She also served as a poster professor and discussant for presentations.
UAB Trauma and Surgical Critical Care fellow Michelle Mangold, D.O., – who serves in the Air Force – received an “Always Remember” military scholarship.
