The General Surgery Residency Program is pleased to introduce the 2021 Military Match Resident, Emily Baird. She is the first military match and will graduate with the residency class of 2026.

Baird attended Bowdoin College and earned a master’s degree in international economics and south Asian studies from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. She will graduate from the Uniformed Services University in May 2021.

Prior to attending medical school and commissioning in the Army, she served as a civilian counterterrorism analyst for the Department of Defense. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, skiing, running and travelling.“I am thrilled to be the first resident in this new military pathway, and take advantage of all that UAB has to offer,” says Baird.

“We are enthusiastic to have Baird join us as our first resident in the Military Match Program. She brings an extensive military background having served in multiple positions within the Army. We are excited to have a future military leader joining our residency program for training,” says Britney Corey, M.D., FACS, director of the General Surgery Residency Program.

The Military Match Pathway is a coalition with the Defense Health Agency to accept and train one of their residents each year. This resident will account for one of the eight General Surgery Residency spots. With 23 years of experience in the Army, Department of Surgery professor John Holcomb, M.D., FACS, is uniquely positioned to support this pathway and looks forward to seeing it develop.

“As a healthcare department, our partnerships with the community are immensely important,” said Holcomb. “This new pathway will allow us to impart our world-class training as the third-largest public hospital in the U.S. on future trainees from the Defense Health Agency.”
