HerringRoseUAB medical student Brendon Herring, MS and Bart Rose, M.D., MAS, FACS, of the Division of Surgical Oncology recently published “Under-Representation of Racial Groups in Genomics Studies of Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasms” in Cancer Research Communications.

Prior research in gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (GEP-NEN) has largely been conducted on White patients. In this article, the authors aim to evaluate genomic studies in different racial groups.

Accessibility to large research institutions may affect participation from racial minority groups. The authors note, however, diversity in research populations is essential to understanding GEP-NEN and tumor biology to advance disease prevention, diagnosis, therapeutic targeting, and clinical outcomes.

To guide the facilitation of underrepresented populations, the FDA released procedures and recommendations, in 2020, for clinical trials through Project Equity.
