Faculty and Teaching:

• UAB residents are exposed to knowledge and expertise from exclusively subspecialty-trained faculty.
• Our faculty are often nationally/internationally recognized as leaders
• Resident educational experience is supplemented by daily conferences that include both didactic and case-based portions.
• Conferences occur on a two year schedule that includes all relevant topics necessary for residents to excel both clinically and on their board examinations.
• Residents attend division specific teaching conferences and multi-disciplinary conferences where they can interact with and gain insight from physicians of varying specialties.
• Dedicated radiologic physics curriculum

Program Culture:

• We believe in a true family atmosphere where there is real collegiality between our residents, fellows and faculty.  This is palpable from the moment you step into a reading room here.
• Our faculty works hard to train radiologists who are skilled in differential diagnosis, practical management, and the interpersonal skills needed to compete in today’s healthcare environment.
• We strive to teach our residents to be superb clinicians as well as critical interpreters of the radiological literature.
• We are a “resident run” department where trainees are expected to be pro-active and engaged learners while on the clinical service. We believe our results are impressive and we are dedicated to perpetually enhancing the culture of learning that has been established at UAB.
• We train approximately 13-15 fellows per year but we are careful that their education does not deprive our residents of learning opportunities. In some sections, the fellows function as junior faculty where they serve as valuable resources for the residents.

Evaluations and Moonlighting:

• Residents are evaluated anonymously during each rotation.
• All residents meet with one of the program directors every six months to discuss evaluations as well as educational pursuits and career goals.
• Residents are also afforded the opportunity to provide the program and faculty with anonymous feedback. Recommendations by the residents are taken seriously so that we can continue to improve our educational offerings.
• Monthly resident feedback session with the program directors.
• Both internal and external moonlighting is allowed, as long as it does not interfere with resident training/resident duty hour regulation. There are several in-house moonlighting opportunities for all years of training.
