Medical students are encouraged to rotate through our Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation service to gain an appreciation of the specialty and different patient populations. Students on our service will improve their knowledge base in inpatient and outpatient settings. Acting Internships (AIs) and electives are offered through UAB School of Medicine.

Acting Internships
This rotation is preferred for fourth-year medical students interested in applying for a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency.
Each four-week rotation is composed of assignments on the inpatient services (TBI, SCI, Stroke, General Rehab) and/or outpatient clinics. Students are expected to fully participate in the service, including morning rounds, conferences, clinics, and other didactic activities. Students do not take call during these experiences. Finally, students are asked to prepare one, 10-minute presentation to be given at the end of the rotation, during an afternoon conference.
Elective
This rotation is designed for third and fourth-year medical students. If students decide to pursue Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, they are strongly encourage to take the AI.

Visiting Medical Students
We welcome medical students from other institutions to experience Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at UAB. Our department participates in the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) program.

Students are expected to fully participate in the service, including morning rounds, conferences, clinics, and other didactic activities. Students do not take call during these experiences. Finally, students are asked to prepare one, 10-minute presentation to be given at the end of the rotation, during an afternoon conference.
Prerequisites for an externship include:

Enrollment in an accredited medical school (MD or DO)

Application via the VSAS program

CV and Step I - USMLE and/or COMLEX board score for review
Due to limitations of resources, visiting student rotations are restricted to students and graduates of U.S. medical schools.
Finally, if accepted to participate in an externship, students will receive orientation and scheduling information from the School of Medicine scheduling office. Our Education Coordinator, Maria Hayes, will also be in contact with you prior to the start of your rotation. We look forward to working with students to provide an optimal educational experience.
