The UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is leading the way in meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities through compassionate care, cutting-edge research, and training the next generation of professionals.
The department employs more than 25 faculty and 110 staff. We are the home of the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, and have been at both a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System and Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems site for over 30 years. In our over 50 year history as a department, we have trained 126 residents and served over 450,000 patients.
Physiatrists use a team approach to maximize every patients’ independence in activities of daily living and improve quality of life. Our physiatrists work closely with patients and their families along with a multidisciplinary team of rehab psychologists, neuropsychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation nurses, and other rehabilitation professionals. Together, we design comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans utilize state of the art treatments to maximize function and quality of life for our patients.
