The Glaucoma Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine is a one-year clinical program within the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. The fellow works closely with six faculty members on the glaucoma service at UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye. The program is AUPO FCC compliant.

The fellowship program emphasizes the development of expertise in all phases of the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. The fellow provides supervisory and teaching support for the residency program, both in the operating room and in outpatient glaucoma clinics at Cooper Green Mercy Health, Lions Clinic and UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye. Increasing responsibility for glaucoma surger—including filters, shunts and cataracts—is provided throughout the year.

Prior fellows perform several hundred surgical procedures as primary surgeon including exposure to pediatric glaucoma procedures (goniotomy, 360° trabeculotomy) and all surgical procedures for glaucoma.

Glaucoma Fellowship Application Information

Applications for the UAB Glaucoma Fellowship are due by September 1 of the year preceding the July 1 start date. The selected fellow will receive a faculty appointment as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Our fellows are paid at the PGY-5 level. Detailed information about stipends and benefits is available on the Graduate Education website.
