The University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences offers comprehensive subspecialty fellowship and advanced residency training grounded in a long-standing tradition of clinical excellence, innovation and education. With a history of training leaders in academic medicine and private practice, UAB Ophthalmology combines nationally recognized faculty expertise with a collaborative, multidisciplinary care model.
Fellows train primarily at UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye and benefit from robust partnerships with the the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Children’s of Alabama and Cooper Green Mercy Health and leading private practice groups across the greater Birmingham area. This network provides diverse, high-volume exposure to complex pathology while serving a broad and underserved patient population.
Subspecialty opportunities include Cornea, Glaucoma, Retina, Oculoplastic, Low Vision Rehabilitation, and a Pediatric Optometric Residency. Across programs, trainees gain progressive surgical responsibility, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic experience and meaningful roles in resident education and academic conferences. Research engagement opportunities further support the development of future clinician-scientists and educators.
Graduates of UAB Ophthalmology programs are exceptionally prepared to lead in collaborative, multi-specialty environments and to advance the field of ophthalmology and optometry.
