The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences offers Alabama’s only ophthalmology residency program. As part of a large academic medical community, this program provides residents robust training opportunities.

The department is based in UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye. A modern, superbly equipped facility, UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye has a busy outpatient surgery center, a 24-hour eye emergency room, ophthalmic laser center, and 17 operating suites.

As the only 24/7 freestanding dedicated eye emergency department in the region, UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye provides Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences residents a unique and clinically valuable training experience. The UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye emergency room sees more than 6,000 visits per year, of which more than 500 are eye trauma. Residents have the opportunity to diagnose and treat numerous ophthalmologic conditions.

Visiting Student Rotations (VSLO)

The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences accepts visiting medical student applications through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program.

All applications and required documentation must be submitted through the VSLO website. Applications submitted outside of VSLO will not be reviewed. 

We are currently planning to host three visiting student rotations during August through October.

Visiting Student Application Timeline

  • January 20 – VSLO opens for student access
  • Early February – UAB VSLO catalog available for students to browse
  • March 2 – Applications open for submission
  • April 1 – First round of invitations extended
