Research and Teaching Interests:
- Building the tools, methods, and infrastructure needed to extract information and phenotypes of interest from biomedical text using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine learning.
Dr. Osborne worked at the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center developing the Disease Ontology and cancer bioinformatics tooling before moving to Birmingham to work on microbial bioinformatics at UAB’s Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center. He teaches NLP for both the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science and UAB's Computer Science Department where student's complete a large project utilizing modern NLP methods including Large Language Models. Osborne has been a member of the American Medical Informatics Association since 2013, and his laboratory develops and maintains NLP-integrated registry systems at UAB to identify patients of interest to researchers and clinical care providers.
