The Department commends Mary Margaret Basham, MD (PGY-3) for the extraordinary patient care she recently provided to a woman admitted with chest pain and a history of colon cancer who developed a gastrointestinal perforation. Dr. Basham diligently wrote cross-cover notes that were impressive in their detail, and we are proud to salute her attentiveness to both her patient and the medical record.

Final results from the landmark NIH-sponsored Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine and were presented during the American Heart Association 2015 Scientific Sessions in Orlando. The results are in part products of work conducted by UAB investigators, including Suzanne Oparil, MD (Cardiovascular Disease) Cora E. Lewis, MD (Preventive Medicine) David A. Calhoun, MD (Cardiovascular Disease) Stephen P. Glasser, MD (Preventive Medicine) and Virginia G. Bradley, PhD (Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care). The study demonstrates that treating patients 50 and older with high blood pressure to a systolic blood pressure of less than 120 mm Hg reduced rates of cardiovascular events, including death due to cardiovascular disease, heart failure, stroke and heart attack, by 25 percent.

The Department of Medicine salutes Scott Novack, MD (PGY-1, Anesthesia) for his extraordinary patient care. While on the renal ward, he encountered an unresponsive dialysis patient and immediately arranged for an emergency CT. He took the patient to radiology himself, but afterwards couldn’t find an available bed for the patient to be monitored closely. Unwilling to compromise patient safety, Dr. Novack persevered in finding a way to get his patient intubated and transferred to the Neurology ICU. 

Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington and Director of the Seattle STD/HIV Prevention Training Center, Jeanne Marazzo, MD, will lead the Division of Infectious Diseases beginning early next year. She is internationally recognized for her research and education efforts in the field of sexually transmitted infections, especially as they affect women’s health.

Internal Medicine Residents Robert Smola, MD, Carlie Stein, MD, William Benton, MD, and Rajat Kalra, MD, have been selected to participate in the UAB Medicine Chief Quality Resident Program. 

Paul Fitzmorris, MD (PGY-3) was just published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology for his case study “An Unusual Presentation of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.”

The annual “Camp Dismukes” retreat was held last weekend in honor of William Dismukes, MD, professor emeritus and director of the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program from 1981-2002. Coverage was provided for all of the residents and their families so they could enjoy time together at beautiful Oak Mountain State Park.

Two of our residency program alumni, Philip Johnson, MD, PhD (2011) and Mustafa Ahmed, MD (2009) recently won the 2015 Alabama Launchpad Startup Competition. Their HIPAA-compliant software application enables physicians to securely exchange medical images online. Read the UAB story here.
