Good News Update: February 22, 2016
Ashita Tolwani, MD (Nephrology) has received the 2016 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for the School of Medicine. This award recognizes her depth of knowledge in nephrology and critical care, her fairness and accessibility to trainees, and her ability to inspire and mentor others. The Department salutes Dr. Tolwani for this extraordinary achievement.

Good News Update: February 15, 2016
Angelynn Luckado, a 14-year-old Lincoln, Alabama, resident, had a rare double lung and heart transplant at UAB in November 2015. Having been born with Cystic Fibrosis, Angelynn had always known that she would one day need a lung transplant, but through a series of surgical complications, it was determined that she would need two new lungs and a heart from a single donor to survive. She received ECMO for 102 days until she finally got her new organs — which came from a 26-year-old donor whose family knew Angelynn's family. The story was reported this week on NBC’s Today Show and was featured in a comprehensive article from UAB News.
Jeanne Marrazzo, MD, MPH, joined our faculty this week as Director of our Division of Infectious Diseases. Jeanne is internationally recognized for her research and education efforts in the field of sexually transmitted infections, especially as they affect women’s health. She comes to UAB from the University of Washington. Welcome, Jeanne!
Two Department of Medicine Division Directors have been elected to membership in the Association of American Physicians. Ravi Bhatia, MD (Hematology and Oncology) and Victor J. Thannickal, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) earned this prestigious honor for their accomplishments in pursuit of medical knowledge and their discoveries’ application to clinical medicine.
Yulia Khodneva MD, PhD (Preventive Medicine) was recently published in the journal Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. Her study demonstrated for the first time that there is an association between verapamil use and lower fasting glucose levels in humans with diabetes.
Eric Wallace, MD (Nephrology) has been invited to participate in the American Society of Nephrology’s Kidney Health Initiative project that will develop a series of white papers and a stakeholder symposium to address the state of remote monitoring and telemedicine technology for patients with ESRD and renal illness.
David Freedman, MD (Infectious Diseases) discussed the Zika virus in a UAB News video interview, touching on who is at risk, how to prevent infection and the likelihood of an United States outbreak. The first confirmed Zika case in Alabama was reported this week.

Good News Update: February 1, 2016
Dialysis Clinic, Inc. surprised Professor Emeritus Ed Rutsky, MD, this week with the announcement that DCI will contribute $1.5 million to the Division of Nephrology to establish an endowed chair in his honor. Attendees at the NRTC conference where the announcement took place report that for the first time in memory, Dr. Rutsky was rendered speechless! The Department is most grateful for Fred Steading, administrator for one of the Birmingham DCI units, and Azita Takeshian, a former UAB nephrology fellow, who were instrumental in making this enduring tribute to Dr. Rutsky possible.
