The UAB Institute for Human Rights (IHR) has served as a platform for dialogue, discussion, and collaboration on research, education, and public conversations related to human rights, social justice, and equity locally, nationally, and internationally since its creation in 2016.

The IHR employs innovative, interdisciplinary scientific methods to integrate existing UAB and community strengths to create and foster new research, policy solutions, outreach activities, and educational programming relating to all aspects of human rights, including training programs in such areas as civil discourse, rights-based approaches to health and technologies, and grassroots-driven advocacy.
The IHR offers consulting and collaboration on community-engaged research and teaching, interdisciplinary team building, grant writing, and community dialogue.

In addition, beginning in Fall 2024, the College of Arts and Sciences will offer a new Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights, the first degree of its kind in the Deep South.
