Scholarships

The Department of Biology has funding available for need-based and academic scholarships for each academic year. Please please make sure you read the requirements and guidelines for these scholarships before submitting an application. You can apply for these scholarships through the UAB BSMART system.

The James McClintock Endowed Scholarship in Polar and Marine Biology

Applicants must be Biology majors with an interest in polar and marine biology. Applicants must have earned at least an overall 3.5 GPA. Preference will be given to students for whom affordability may be an obstacle, and who might otherwise be unable to attend the University, and also will consider the merit of the students.

The Kathleen Reinhardt Eipers Endowed Scholarship in Biology

This scholarship is for students enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program within the Department of Biology. Applicants should demonstrate solid academic promise and achievement and have earned at least an overall 3.0 grade point average in coursework completed prior to the time of application. Preference will be given to candidates who have expressed an interest in non-medical track careers; for example (but not Iimited to) field biology, laboratory research, and/or education if possible.

The Freshman Biology Scholarship

Applicants must be incoming freshmen who will be enrolled full-time as Biology majors in the Department of Biology. Applicants should have an ACT score of 25 or greater and rank in the top 20% of their graduating class.

The Ken R. Marion Biology Career Award

Applicants must be currently enrolled as a Biology major and have achieved at least junior class standing at the time of the award. Applicants must demonstrate promise and commitment in pursuing teaching and/or research in biology as a career, and should have earned at least a 3.2 grade-point average overall and in their biology courses.

The Ken R. Marion Ecology/Environmental Science Career Award

Applicants must be currently enrolled as a Biology major or minor and have achieved at least a junior class standing at the time of the award. Applicants must demonstrate promise and a commitment in pursuing a career in some aspect of ecology or environmental science, and should have earned at least a 3.2 grade-point average overall and in their biology courses.

The Anne M. Cusic Scholarship in Biology

Applicants must be currently enrolled as a Biology major and have completed BY 123 and BY 124 at UAB. Candidates must have a 3.0 GPA overall and in their biology courses. Recipients may not apply for the award in subsequent years.

Student Travel Grants

Complete the UAB Department of Biology Student Travel Grant Request Form for travel grant consideration. Eligibility: Biology undergraduate majors and MS/PhD Biology students. Completed request forms should be submitted to Kim Wilcox, the Biology Department’s Business Officer, in the Science & Engineering Complex’s East Science Hall room 3154.
