Guidelines

Purpose

The CAPPI Grant Program provides pilot funds for new pain and/or addiction research. Only Instructors or Assistant Professors without extramural funding other than a K award are eligible to apply. The expectation is generation of pilot data resulting in a NIH or other grant submission after one year of funding.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must have a full-time faculty appointment of: Instructor or Assistant Professor on the non-tenure or tenure track at UAB. Post-doctoral Fellows, Research Associates, Part-time Faculty and Visiting Faculty are NOT eligible to apply. Associate or Full Professors are NOT eligible to apply.

Applications must involve basic, translational, clinical, or population-based research projects related to pain and/or addiction.

Applications pertaining to developing, implementing, or expanding academic service-learning opportunities for UAB students are not eligible. Likewise, applications to develop new approaches to instruction and learning are also not eligible.

The over-arching goal is to provide funding that will help the applicant progress toward submitting a NIH grant. The applicant should not select a project that relies on other funding that has not yet been awarded (e.g., doing an ancillary project relying on data specimens or participants that are part of a R01 submitted application).

Junior Faculty

The CAPPI program specifically targets early career Instructors or Assistant Professors. Only Instructors or Assistant Professors without substantial external funding (not awarded a grant of $100,000 [annual direct costs] or more, previously or currently-at the time of application). Assistant Professor faculty with current mentored awards (e.g., K01, K08, K23, K99/R00) are eligible to apply.
