Om Muzumdar – 2024 Presidential Honors Fellowship
Through the Presidential Honors Fellowship, I was able to accomplish multiple goals and go through unique experiences that set the foundation for a productive summer. Some of the experiences I faced were quite impactful to me in terms of building my character, work ethic, and foundation for my medical career. For example, I was given access to the UAB Hospital as well as Highlands Hospital which were (especially the UAB Hospital) unique from the hospitals at home and gave me a sense of thrill, responsibility, and knowledge that confirmed my desire to work in the medical field. Furthermore, I conducted multiple sleep studies in both locations, often being in charge of the CRU unit as part of my duty. These experiences gave me a glimpse of what it's like to work at the hospital, as well as sympathy and understanding for the nurses, janitors, managers, and others that worked there (especially night shifts). I was also able to learn how to analyze/manage actigraphy data, perform an EEG on patients, and administer breathalyzer/cognitive tests which are all useful skills for an aspiring medical student.
