Students
We help writers grow. Our motto is any student, any writing project, and any stage.
Who can use the UWC?
All current UAB students! We help undergraduate and graduate students from any major.
What are tutoring sessions like?
Students can meet with a tutor in person or online. These sessions are relaxed and engaging, like talking to a friend or mentor about your writing. You can also write during your tutoring session. Some people find they focus better when they write with someone else around (like a UWC tutor!).
Can I just send in a paper for feedback?
Yes! You may upload a paper and your assignment instructions to our online system. A tutor will spend one hour providing written feedback. You do not need to be present. Tutors never use AI to provide feedback.
How do I schedule an appointment?
- For online or in-person sessions: Log into our online scheduling and tutoring system with your Blazer ID and password. The “Meet with a Tutor” schedule will appear by default. Choose a day and time that works for you and select whether you want to meet in person or online. Once you schedule an appointment, your time will appear in yellow.
- To upload a paper for feedback, select the "Upload Your Work & Get Feedback" schedule, choose a slot, and upload your paper and assignment instructions. If all slots are full on the current day, choose a slot later in the week. Once you have booked a slot, it will appear in yellow.
I scheduled an in-person appointment. Where do I go?
You will meet with your tutor at our location in Sterne Library 175.
I scheduled an online appointment. How will I meet with my tutor?
Log into our scheduling and online tutoring system a few minutes before your appointment. Click on your appointment (in yellow). To join the session, click the red "Start or Join Your Online Consultation" button.
I uploaded my paper for feedback. When and where will I get my feedback?
Upload your paper by 9:00 AM on the day of the slot you chose and receive your feedback by 9:00 PM that day. You will receive an email with your feedback attached. You may also access your feedback by logging into the online system and clicking your slot (in yellow).
How long are sessions? How many can I have?
In-person and online sessions are 25 or 50 minutes. Feedback slots are one hour, meaning your tutor will spend a maximum of one hour putting feedback on your paper. Students may have two sessions of any type per week, with possible limits during busy times.
Will my professor know I used the UWC?
At the end of tutoring sessions, tutors write a brief report summarizing what we did. Upon request, we can share this with your professor.
