Peer Wellness Ambassador: Educator
POSITION SUMMARY
Peer Wellness Ambassadors (PWAs) are a committed group of students who understand the importance of health and wellness and the value of connecting students to resources on campus to be successful while at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Through intentional collaboration and support from University resources and the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life, PWA Educators help to foster a healthy environment within first-year residence halls by connecting their peers with mental and physical health and wellness resources and providing engaging programming that allows each member of our community to thrive and sustain the challenges, rigors, and stress of pursuing an academic degree while living in the residence halls.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The PWA role primarily creates a culture of positive health and wellness for residents, refers students to campus resources to maximize student success, and encourages participation in educational activities by utilizing the objectives outlined below. The following roles and tasks provide the tools to achieve the educational mission of The University of Alabama at Birmingham, the vision of the Division of Student Affairs, and the goals of the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life in collaboration with various departments across campus.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Required to complete (1) monthly program within your assigned residence hall geared around health and wellness. Programming consists of residence hall programs, tabling, and partnership programs. You will have opportunities to partner with campus partners, RAs (Resident Assistants), and PWA Coaches.
- Create monthly bulletin boards within your assigned residence hall. Bulletin boards consist of welcome back blazers/ introduction of PWAs, promotion of your monthly programming, or the wellness topic that coincides with your program of the month.
- Required to work (3) three hours at the front desk of your assigned hall per week. It is required that PWAs work the 6 pm –9 pm desk shift on Thursdays.
- Required to work one (1) weekend desk shift per semester.
- Collaborate with campus and Birmingham-city departments and resources to identify and create opportunities to educate peers about health and wellness.
- Seek out opportunities to work with Resident Assistants, the Residence Hall Association, and Hall Councils to connect peers to campus resources and events that promote the concept of a healthy, balanced life while a student and beyond.
- Attendance weekly Peer Wellness Ambassador Meetings student staff meetings(Wednesdays, 6:30pm–8:30 pm).
- Attendance at student staff training in August and January.
- Required to work Move in day(s) in Fall semester.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a High School GPA of a 3.0 or higher, significant involvement in co-curricular activities outside of the classroom setting.
- Once in the role, Peer Wellness Ambassadors must maintain a 2.5 cumulative and semester GPA. Failure to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher will result in removal in from the position. Failure to achieve a semester GPA of 2.5 or higher will result in being placed on departmental academic probation.
- All PWAs must be registered for a minimum of 12 undergraduate-level hours or 9 graduate-level hours for both fall and spring term.
- Must be in good conduct standing with the university – conduct records will be verified
- Must commit to 1 (academic) year of service (fall and spring terms)
- PWAs are required to receive prior approval before applying for any employment opportunities outside of the PWA position. This request must be approved by the GA of Peer Support Programs and the Assistant Director of Care and Peer Support Programs.
REQUIRED SKILLS
To be considered for this position, applicants must:
- Be willing to collaborate with their student peers, campus partners, and Residence Life staff.
- Have good understanding of Health and Wellness resources.
- Be able to develop relationships and manage conflict
- Have participated in community health, wellness, and prevention efforts

AS A RESULT OF SERVING IN THE PEER WELLNESS AMBASSADOR ROLE WITH THE OFFICE OF STUDENT HOUSING AND RESIDNECE LIFE, STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS: PRACTICAL LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT SKILLS - Understand of basic requirements of the role and policies and procedures associated with the position.
- Understand of the Student Housing and Residence Life vision and mission.

Through intentional collaboration and support from University resources and the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life, PWA Coaches help to foster a healthy environment within the residence halls by connecting their peers with mental and physical health and wellness resources and providing 1:1 peer coaching that allows each member of our community to thrive and sustain the challenges, rigors, and stress of pursuing an academic degree while living in the residence halls.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The PWA role primarily creates a culture of positive health and wellness for residents, refers students to campus resources to maximize student success, and encourage participation in educational activities by utilizing the objectives outlined below. - Attend weekly Peer Wellness Ambassador Meetings student staff meetings(Wednesdays, 6:30pm–8:30 pm).
- Attendance at student staff training in August and January.
- Assist with Move in day(s) in Fall semester.
- Plan and execute the PWA Signature Programming events (1 per semester).
- Attendance at Super Sunday, (occurs in April after selection).
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must obtain sophomore status (minimum of 30 hours) by the end of the summer term preceding the fall semester of employment.
- Must be available to participate in Peer Chat hours, after 5pm Monday-Thursday.
- Must commit to 1 (academic) year of service (fall and spring terms).
- A minimum of one semester’s residency in one of UAB Student Housing’s residence halls is preferred
