The Alabama Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (Alabama HIMSS) delivered four merit scholarships in 2019 – all four scholarships were awarded to students in the UAB School of Health Professions’ Graduate Programs in Health Informatics.
Mary Place and Candis Riggs – each second-year M.S. in Health Informatics (MSHI) students, along with Brody Williamson, a dual M.S. in Health Administration (MSHA)/MBA student, and Heather Martin, a PhD in Administration-Health Services student on the Health Informatics Track, are this year’s scholarship recipients.
“UAB students recognize the importance of professional development and the value of learning and participating outside of a classroom setting,” said Joni Wyatt, MHA, MHIA, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, president of Alabama HIMSS and healthcare advisor, Kassouf & Co. “Our chapter is all volunteers and we appreciate that UAB HI students took advantage of opportunities to volunteer, participate, contribute and advocate. They are the next generation of HIMSS leaders and the committee wanted to reward them for their time, their work, and the energy they give.”
The Alabama HIMSS scholarship committee recognized the UAB students’ submissions as “the most complete and responsive – scoring the highest” which led to the awards.
These scholarships are established and funded by Alabama HIMSS and are awarded to HIMSS members “who exhibit excellence, actively engage in supporting the Alabama Chapter activities and demonstrate leadership potential in the healthcare information and management systems industry.”
Place, Riggs, Williamson and Martin were honored for their excellence and awarded the scholarships at the Alabama HIMSS annual Spring Conference on April 24 ,2019, in Huntsville.
