The UAB Department of Health Services Administration faculty has grown to 48 with the addition of three new research-engaged members.

Phil Cendoma, MSHA, MBA, FACHE (MSHA Class 47) spent several years in hospital administration and in health insurance consulting before returning to UAB to earn his PhD in Administration-Health Services. He will teach healthcare finance at the graduate and undergraduate levels. His research interests include hospital financial performance and outcomes, such as uncompensated care, and the role Federally Qualified Health Centers play as community health providers in underserved areas.

Steven W. Howard, PhD, is a Fulbright Program Specialist and recently spent two months studying value-based care innovations in Europe. He spent the past 11 years at Saint Louis University’s MHA program. Prior to that, he worked in the managed care and high-tech sectors of health care in Oregon. His research interest is innovation in healthcare delivery and payment, particularly with respect to chronic disease, value-based care and alternative payment models.

Seung-Yup (Joshua) Lee, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow of Healthcare Analytics and Operations Management at Vanderbilt University. He joins UAB as a visiting assistant professor and will be teaching operations management and management science. His research focuses on the quality use of information for process integration in a digital healthcare environment. He strives to 1) optimize and support operational and clinical decisions through data-driven modeling and to 2) understand the implications of information technology on hospital performance through empirical analysis.

“These three bring a combination of real-world experience and evidential research that will help build upon our overarching mission to develop leaders and discover solutions that will impact the quality of health care and the performance of health systems,” said Charles D. Stokes, FACHE, interim department chair and former president and CEO of Memorial Hermann Health System.

These hires are part of recent ambitious growth from the department in programs, credit hours, students and faculty. The HSA department is home to one baccalaureate program, five master’s degrees, two doctoral degrees and five graduate certificates.

The department faculty now consist of three instructors, 14 assistant professors, nine associate professors, seven professors, one endowed professor, one university professor, two distinguished professors, one endowed chair, five Executive-in-Residence and five professor emeriti.
