Weech-Maldonado awarded $1.25 million grant for “high-Medicaid” nursing home research

robert maldonado Robert Weech-Maldonado, Ph.D.Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Health Professions have been awarded $1.25 million by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to better understand the management and market factors associated with high performance among nursing homes that have a high proportion, 85 percent or greater, of Medicaid residents.

Albin donates Gossman thesis to UAB PT

Maurice Albin, M.D. and David Morris, Ph.D. with Gossman thesisMaurice S. Albin, M.D., professor of anesthesiology in the UAB School of Medicine, presented his copy of a Master’s Thesis, submitted by a young Marilyn Gossman, to the UAB Department of Physical Therapy as a historical archive. Albin was Gossman’s thesis Chair when she was a student at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio in 1965, when Albin was an assistant professor at the same institution. Read more

Young on list of Top 25 Most Powerful Women in Colorado

Sylvia Young, alumna of the UAB Master of Science in Health Administration (Class 19) program, has been named one of the Top 25 Most Powerful Women by the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Winners are nominated by peers and then chosen by the previous year’s Top 25. Young currently serves as president and CEO of HCA Continental Division and HCA-HealthONE. Read more

Jennings 1 of 5 named Presidential Scholar by the AcademyHealth Institute

J'Aime Jennings AcademyHealth Presidential ScholarJ’Aime Jennings, MPA, a doctoral candidate in the UAB Doctoral Program in Administration-Health Services Doctor of Philosophy program, is one of only five students in the United States to earn the Presidential Scholarship for the AcademyHealth Institute on Advocacy and Public Policy. UAB has only Physician Assistant student to win ASAHP Scholarship

David Wood, ASAHP scholarship winnerDavid Wood, a second-year student in the UAB Physician Assistant program, was awarded a Scholarship of Excellence by the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions. Only 12 students in the U.S. received this honor and Wood is the only Physician Assistant student in the group. Read more

SHP alumnus Condit named MSHA’s Northeast Market VP/CMO

Brian E. Condit, MD, FAAPMR, graduate of the UAB Master of Science in Health Administration, has been named Vice President / Chief Medical Officer for the Northeast Market of Mountain States Health Alliance. Mountain States has 14 hospitals and serves 29 counties in Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina. It is that region’s largest healthcare system. Read more

Nutrition Science’s Khaled earns Fulbright-Nehru award to study Global Health

Khaled awarded Fulbright-NehruA nutrition professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Health Professions is awarded a Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award to develop and improve research and teaching efforts in India related to Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). UAB PT leads way in promoting national program on health for people with disabilities

I Can Do It You Can Do It program pairs UAB PT students and AIDB Helen Keller School studentsThe University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Physical Therapy is the first in the state of Alabama to launch the national I Can Do It, You Can Do It (ICDI) program for health promotion for individuals with disabilities. The PT program, housed in the UAB School of Health Professions, has partnered with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition per the recommendation and encouragement of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Student Assembly. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) honored two University of Alabama at Birmingham alumnae at its annual AHIMA Triumph Awards ceremony. Donna J. Slovensky, Ph.D., RHIA, FAHIMA, received the Literacy Legacy Award and Joan C. Hicks, MSHI, RHIA, received the Innovation Award. Read more

School of Health Professions boasts first UAB alumni chapter in Saudi Arabia

EMSHA Class 1 graduation, Dec. 2013The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s National Alumni Society has formally recognized the UAB Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) Alumni Chapter. The first NAS chapter established in the Middle East includes 31 graduates of Saudi Arabia’s inaugural UAB Executive Master of Science in Health Administration. The chapter is open to any UAB graduate that lives in Saudi Arabia. Read more

Tera Webb wins national award from ASCLS

Tera Webb, ASCLS National Key to the FutureTera Webb, MS, MLS(ASCP)cm, a teacher in the UAB Clinical Laboratory Sciences program, has been named a National Key to the Future by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science. The ASCLS rewards those with less than three years’ of membership “who have demonstrated their leadership potential to the organization.” Read more

The award is considered the ALAPTA's most prestigious honor and was given to Lein at the ALAPTA annual conference on Saturday, August 23, 2014. Read more

Jennifer Dingle named AUPHA Boyd Scholar

SHP Flag Bearer Jennifer Dingle Jennifer Dingle, SHP flag-bearer at 2014 UAB graduationJennifer Dingle, a 2014 graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health Care Management Program, wins a $40,000 scholarship from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). She is one of only two students in the U.S. to earn the HCA Corris Boyd Scholarship for 2014.
