The University-Wide Interdisciplinary Research Center (UWIRC) program was proposed in 1995 by Drs. Allman, Hunter, LoBuglio, and Craig and Sharon Ramey, to promote interdisciplinary research, education, and service. It was implemented with initial funding in 1997 for ten “full” centers and seven “pilot” centers. Since its inception, this program has played a major role in promoting interdisciplinary, cross-institutional research collaboration at UAB.

In 2007, the Council of Center Directors was initiated to provide leadership and advice to the program. In 2024, Institute Directors were added to the group and the name was changed to the Council of Center and Institute Directors (COCID).  From the group’s inception in 2007, its leadership has been as follows:
