After an extensive national search, UAB has named Kevyn E. Merten, Ph.D., as the senior associate vice president for Research Operations, effective Jan. 14. Merten will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Office of Research. He joins UAB from the University of Louisville.

This month, UAB Employee Wellness is spotlighting the impact pets have on our mental health — including those experiencing seasonal mood shifts — by bringing back its UAB’s Cutest Pet Contest. UAB employees are invited to submit pictures of pets now through Nov. 14.
You may be eligible to participate in a research study looking at the effects of sacubitril/valsartan on how your body handles sugar. This medication is related to blood pressure and is safe to take with or without hypertension. Eligible participants must be healthy men and women, African American, and have no history of diabetes, heart disease or kidney problems. The study involves performing some exercise, taking sacubitril/valsartan, and collecting blood samples. Participants will be compensated $675 for completing all the visits. Participate in the PRECISION-BP research study investigating the best time to take blood pressure medication, morning or evening. This study participants will receive blood pressure medications for 28 days. Eligible participants must be obese (BMI: 30-45 kg/m2) men and women, have high blood pressure, and have no history of heart or kidney problems. The study involves wearing a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours, 24-hour inpatient visits at UAB Hospital, taking medications, and collecting blood and urine samples. Meals will be provided at no cost. Participants will be compensated $575 for completing the study visits. The Denosumab for Type 1 Diabetes phase 1/2 clinical trial, is a collaborative study with the Arthur Riggs Diabetes and Metabolism Research Institute and the Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases at Indiana University.
