July 27, 2026: Police are investigating a suspicious package near the Marriott at 821 20th Street South. 20th Street between University and 9th Ave is closed. AVOID AREA. Updates to follow. 

Update: ALL CLEAR. Birmingham and UAB Police have safely cleared the scene near 821 20th Street South, and it was determined there was no threat. 20th Street between University and 9th ave has reopened. 

July 27, 2026, 3:25 p.m.: Evacuate and avoid 23rd Street South between 1st Avenue South and 5th Avenue South due to a gas leak and follow directions from emergency officials. No UAB facilities are currently impacted. Check your UAB email for additional information.
