Adam Gordon, OD, MPH, FAAO, has been named the Department of Optometry and Vision Science Chair. He is the second person to hold the position, which is now appointed by the Dean after faculty input.
“Dr. Gordon is one who I know is capable of this position and will execute it well, said UAB School of Optometry Dean Kelly Nichols, OD, MPH, PhD, FAAO. “His work ethic and vision that he has for this school will make him a successful chair for UABSO.”
Gordon is humbled to be selected for this role, which will allow him to help the school further evolve.
“I specifically want to develop and mentor new faculty members, and to make sure all faculty feel they can trust me to listen and communicate their ideas to the school’s administration,” Gordon said. “I will also strive to implement the schools’ strategic objectives so we can make the school better for everyone—faculty, students, staff, patients and alumni.”
In addition to his latest appointment as chair, Gordon is currently a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Cornea and Contact Lens Service. He is also the Coordinator of the Residency Program in Cornea and Contact Lenses.
He received his bachelor's in Biology and Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis and was the first student to graduate from the combined OD/MPH program at UAB. Gordon began his optometry career as an instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at The Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He joined the faculty at the UAB School of Optometry in 1984.
