Alabama State Nurses’ Association Educational Loan

Educational loans are available to registered nurses who are members of ASNA and are working to complete advanced nursing programs either full-time or part-time. The applicant must presently be enrolled or accepted in good standing into an Alabama-approved school of nursing. ASNA membership is required until the loan is repaid.

Army Student Nurse Program

A student who has completed the second year may enlist voluntarily in the Women’s Army Corps Reserve and continue her education for a period not to exceed 24 months. The selectee will be placed in pay grade E-3 and will receive full pay and allowances. In addition, tuition, fees, and books will be paid by the Department of the Army. Six months prior to graduation, the student will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. Selectees are required to serve on active duty 24 months after graduation, if participation in the program was 12 months or less. If two years’ support has been given, the selectee serves 36 months on active duty.

Associated Health Professions and Occupations Affiliated Educational Programs Veterans Administration

Master’s level advanced nurse practitioners trainee support and nursing administration practicum support. Funds are provided for student support for the clinical practicum experience at the VA Medical Centers for students enrolled in the master’s level clinical nurse specialty areas in Geriatrics, Rehabilitation, Critical Care, and Psychiatric-Mental Health and for students enrolled in the master’s level Nursing Administration Practicum program.

Federal Direct Stafford Loan (3.5% - 8.25%)

This is a long-term loan, which UAB initially recommends and for which the Federal Government provides funds. The loan rate varies from 3.5-8.25% percent depending upon when the loan is first received. The Federal Direct Stafford Loan is repayable 6 months after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half time. The maximum amount one can borrow is $12,500 for undergraduate and non-degree graduate students and $20,500 for graduate students.

Graduate Assistantship

A Graduate Assistantship position is available through the office of the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. This assistantship provides for an annual stipend and eligibility for in-state tuition. In addition, Graduate Assistants who are nursing graduate students may be eligible to receive support for their tuition and fees through a Professional Nurse Traineeship.

National Health Service Corps

The National Health Service Corps provides for two types of financial assistance; scholarships and loan repayment programs. Only students who plan to enroll in the master’s options for Nurse Practitioners are eligible for these programs. Students are encouraged to investigate these options prior to admission to the master’s program.

Navy Nurse Corps Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program

A BSN student who has completed the second year may enlist voluntarily in the Naval Reserve, as Officer Candidates Under Instruction and continue his/her education for a period not to exceed 24 months. Qualified candidates receive full pay and allowances of an E-3 (approximately $1,200/month) for up to 24 months of full-time education. Upon graduation, the student will be commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps, and will be obligated to serve for 4 years active duty service.

Nurses’ Educational Funds, Inc.

Scholarships in the amount of $2,500-$10,000 are available to master’s and doctoral degree students from the NEF. Deadline is March 1st of each year and awards are announced in May.

Parents Loan For Undergraduate Students (PLUS)

This is a long-term loan available to parents of dependent students or to independent students at any income level. The annual loan limit is the cost of attendance minus other aid.

Pell Grant

This grant is for a 9-month period and is available only to undergraduate students who have not received a baccalaureate degree. Eligibility is determined by use of a national formula. Must be enrolled at least half time and grant is usually limited to five full years of study.

Perkins Loans

This is a long term, low interest loan which is repayable 9 months after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half time. There is no payment of principal or interest during periods of at least half-time enrollment. Eligibility is based on need and is determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid using information from the student’s completed file. This program is available to both undergraduate and graduate students.

 
 
 

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

This grant at UAB is for a maximum of $1500 per academic year. Eligibility is determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid using information from the student’s completed file. This grant is available to pell grant recipients enrolled at least half-time.
