Bringing Care to Communities. Improving Outcomes
Alabama's rural families face some of the highest maternal and infant health risks in the nation. Our commitment to the health of Alabama's most vulnerable people is why we started the Moms and Kids Mobile Health Clinic. Our mobile, nurse-led care team brings essential maternal and child health services directly to underserved communities, removing barriers to care and improving access while strengthening Alabama's nursing workforce through clinical training opportunities for students.
The Need: Addressing Maternal and Child Health Gaps in Rural Alabama
Rural Alabamians experience significantly higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, especially in counties, including Perry, Wilcox, Monroe, and Calhoun. These disparities are even more severe for racial and ethnic minority populations. Limited access to care, workforce shortages, and transportation barriers leave too many families without the healthcare services they need. The Moms and Kids Mobile Clinic was created to meet those challenges head on, by delivering care where it's needed most.
Our Solution: A Nurse Led Mobile Health Clinic Model
The Moms and Kids Mobile Health Clinic delivers team based, community centered services across rural Alabama. By leveraging existing UAB resources, including the All of Us Mobile Health Unit, Nurse-Family Partnership of Greater Alabama and financial support from the UAB Strategic Investment Fund, the Moms and Kids Mobile Clinic provides high quality care while building a sustainable workforce through education and training.
Program Goals
Our Moms and Kids Mobile Health Clinic focuses on:
- Delivering nurse led mobile maternal and child health services in high need rural counties.
- Training and expanding the nursing workforce through hands on, culturally responsive education.
- Building a sustainable, long term mobile health clinic model for Alabama.
Model of Care: Phased Growth for Long Term Impact
- Phase 1: Healthcare services for children delivered through the Mobile Health Clinic
- Phase 2: Expansion to maternal health services
This phased approach allows the program to grow responsibly while ensuring quality and sustainability.
Early Impact: Making a Difference Right Now
In August 2025, the Moms and Kids Mobile Health Clinic began serving children enrolled in Head Start programs in Marengo, Wilcox, and Choctaw counties. The team provides physical exams, vision screenings, and hearing screenings required for enrollment, helping children start school healthy and ready to learn.
