In 1973, Johnny Cash wrote a list of 100 songs he wanted his daughter Rosanne to know, calling it her "musical education." Songs on the list included Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings," Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," the traditional gospel spiritual "Motherless Children," "Bury Me under the Weeping Willow" by A.P. Carter and more.

Now, after more than a dozen albums, 21 Top 40 country singles, a Grammy win and 11 No. 1 hits in her 30-plus year career, Cash selected 12 of those songs for "The List." The album, released in October 2009, debuted in the Top 5 on the Country Chart, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 22 and shot to No. 1 on Amazon's Top Country Albums chart, according to Cash's website. Cash has received 10 Grammy Award nominations and was nominated last December for "Sea of Heartbreak," a duet with Bruce Springsteen on "The List." The album is eligible for Grammy consideration this year.

She accepted the award for "Album of the Year" for "The List" at the 2010 Americana Honors and Awards Show in early September. The ceremony, attended by Emmylou Harris, Jack White, Lucinda Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter and many other music luminaries, was held at the fabled Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Cash performed the Bobbie Gentry classic "Ode to Billie Joe."

The eldest child of Cash and his first wife, Vivian Liberto, Rosanne Cash was born in Memphis, Tenn., on May 24, 1955. After her parents separated, she and her three sisters grew up in California. At 18 she joined "The Johnny Cash Show," further absorbing his influence along with that of his legendary touring show partners Carl Perkins and the Carter Family. The Carter Family's June Carter later became Rosanne's stepmother when she married Cash in 1968.

"The List" coincides with the publication of Cash's memoir Composed.  In the book, Cash shares her recollections growing up as Johnny Cash's eldest daughter and coming into her own as a performer, daughter and mother, according to her website. Composed has appeared on the New York Times,  Los Angeles Times and Washington Post bestseller lists.
