BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the second year in a row enrollment at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has reached an all-time high.
For fall 2010, total enrollment at UAB increased by almost 4 percent over last year, up from 16,874 to 17,543.
Undergraduate and freshman enrollment both rose about 3.6 percent and graduate and advanced professional student enrollment grew 4.6 percent. In addition, the number of students living on campus at UAB rose to its highest ever at more than 2,100.
African-American freshman enrollment at UAB grew to 25.9 percent of the freshman class, up from 23.9 percent in fall 2009. In fact, The Princeton Review this year ranked UAB among the top 10 colleges and universities in the diversity category for the third year in a row.
"Two consecutive years of record enrollment is a testament to both the exceptional work of our faculty and staff to attract ever more talented students to UAB, and to the academic performance of our students," says UAB President Carol Z. Garrison, Ph.D.
"UAB offers students an interdisciplinary education, the choice of five campus-wide honors programs and the chance to learn from internationally renowned researchers," Garrison says. "Our programs in health administration and AIDS are listed in U.S. News and World Report's 2011 edition of 'America's Best Graduate Schools' among the nation's top 10, and our primary care program among the top 25.
"The quality of our undergraduate, graduate and professional school programs at UAB have helped us to draw more students from not only all over the country, but from around the world."
