BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - On Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, members of the University of Alabama at Birmingham's freshmen class will move into the campus residence halls with help from family members, upper classmen and other volunteers. Freshmen will be carrying all the comforts of home - from bedding and furniture to flat-screen televisions and computers. Arrivals will be staggered by floor to reduce the time spent outside.

"We will have more than 1,000 freshmen living on campus this year," says UAB Director of Student Housing Marc Booker. "The total number of residential students at UAB has grown to more than 2,100. It's the largest residential population UAB has ever had."

Starting this fall, almost all freshmen receiving academic scholarships will be required to live on campus. Because of the increased demand for housing, freshmen will reside in both Blazer Hall and Camp Hall this year, Booker says.

Several UAB organizations will provide bottled water, towels and snow cones to the freshmen and their families to help the new arrivals cool off as they move items into the dorms. Students representing nearly 30 UAB student organizations also will help the freshmen carry items. In addition, dozens of staffers from the UAB Division of Student Affairs will be on hand to greet the new students. A first aid station will be on site.

The campus residence halls are Blazer Hall, 920 16th St. South, and Camp Hall, 1500 10th Ave. South, just south of Ninth Avenue South and the UAB Campus Recreation Center, located at 1501 University Blvd.
