School of Public Health Invites Nominations for Collaborative “Bridge-Builder” Award

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health is seeking nominations for the Sam Brown Bridge-Builder Endowed Award to honor a faculty member who exemplifies the multidisciplinary and collaborative spirit at UAB.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health is seeking nominations for the Sam Brown Bridge-Builder Endowed Award to honor a faculty member who exemplifies the multidisciplinary and collaborative spirit at UAB.

The new $500 annual award is made possible by gifts to the university in honor of Samuel Brown Jr., Ed.D., a retired professor and associate dean in the UAB School of Medicine who demonstrated that partnerships between departments and across disciplines enhance the overarching teaching and research goals of UAB.

Nominations for the award should be sent to: Sam Brown Bridge-Builders Committee, RPHB 140, 1665 University Blvd, Birmingham, AL  35294-0022, or by e-mail to maxm@uab.edu. Candidates for the award ideally will have demonstrated a commitment to facilitating academic and research collaboration and partnership with tangible affects. All full-time UAB faculty and staff are eligible for the award.

Brown came to UAB in 1975 and held several faculty appointments, including founding director of the UAB Office of Educational Development and associate dean for Program Planning and Educational Research. He is credited with numerous collaborative UAB initiatives that resulted in extramurally funded research and training projects. He also served on executive and management committees of the UAB Center for Metabolic Bone Disease, UAB Center for Emergency Care and Disaster Preparedness, UAB Comprehensive Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Autoimmunity Center and UAB Center for Health Promotion. He retired from UAB in 2005.
