BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Students, faculty and staff at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will lead a march and candlelight vigil against sexual assault at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 27 on the UAB campus as part of the national Take Back the Night observances. The event is open to the public.

Take Back the Night is a national initiative designed to raise awareness of the problem of violence against women and children. In addition, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The Take Back the Night event at UAB will begin with a resource fair in front of the Hill University Center, 1400 University Blvd. where the public can receive information about programs and services offered by the UAB Office of Student Life, the UAB Women's Center, UAB VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood, UAB Police, Planned Parenthood and the YWCA. A representative from Birmingham Rape Response will speak at 6:30 p.m.

At 7 p.m., participants will march south along 14th Street South from the Hill University Center to the Campus Green on corner of 10th Avenue South for a candlelight vigil. The vigil will be held in memory and support of victims of sexual assault and violence, organizers say.
