BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction will host the 2010 MidSouth Reading and Writing Institute from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18-19 in the Hoover Freshman Center, 6055 Fleming Parkway in Hoover.

The conference will feature nationally renowned literacy and reading experts presenting the latest research in reading and writing instruction.

The conference keynote speaker will be author and reading education expert Richard Allington with his lecture "Is Response to Intervention (RTI) Our Last Best Hope?" Allington is the author of several books, including What Really Matters for Fluency.

Other guest speakers will include Ashley Bryan, winner of the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration, Alabama author and writing expert Rick Shelton, reading consultant and author Nancy Boyles, early literacy expert Candace Kuby and master storyteller Nick Foster.

The UAB Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers numerous undergraduate programs that lead to bachelor of science degrees in education and/or an Alabama "Class B" professional certificate in the student's program area.
