BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Center for Community OutReach Development (CORD) will present its annual BioTeach for Teachers workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 14-July 2 in the GENEius Lab at McWane Center, 200 19th St. North.
BioTeach for Teachers is a three-week, six-hour graduate-level introductory laboratory course in molecular biology designed for high-school science teachers. UAB faculty provide a lecture series covering topics that include AIDS, tuberculosis, cancer, forensic medicine, tropical diseases, neurobiology, human genetics, sickle cell anemia and ethical issues in genetic research.
Lectures are coupled with hands-on, laboratory training in bacterial genetics, mutagenesis, DNA cloning, gel electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction, DNA sequencing, forensic analysis, and applications of molecular biology. Science teachers will learn how to incorporate the laboratory experiments into their own classrooms and labs.
The cost of the workshop is free, but space is limited. Applications are accepted on a first-come first-served basis.
